How Often Does A Baseball Team Win By 1 Run

By: Richard Bleuze

I am often asked, "How often does a baseball team win by 1 run?"  More often than you think!  However, read the article to get the percentage.

Betting the MLB runline is a potentially profitable alternative to the traditional moneyline, and now there are more runline options available to bettors than ever before.

In the past, runlines were reserved for games that appeared lopsided.  However, this is no longer the case.  Most sports books offer runlines on every game.  In fact,  some online sports books also offer reverse and alternate runlines, such as 5Dimes,  giving bettors several wagering opportunities on a single game.  Thus, offering more opportunities to choose from and providing greater potential to spot value.

In addition to the traditional moneyline, all sports books offer a runline with the favorite laying at -1.5 runs and the underdog getting the same 1.5 runs, but with a plus sign in front of the runline.  Just remember, when laying runs you will get a much better price than you would get on the favorite with the moneyline.  In addition,  when taking the runs you will get a significantly lower price.  In fact, you might consider going with the team that has the positive figure to laying money.

Just remember, however, that unless you are counting on a two-run home run in extra innings, laying runs, especially on a home team which is more often than not the favorite, means needing the home team to win by two or more runs through only eight innings of at bats.  This is a major disadvantage which explains the vast difference in price.

Some sports books offer alternative runlines, meaning you can get the favorite at +1.5 runs or the underdog at -1.5 runs.  One such online sports book is 5Dimes.

When sports betting, remember that 30 percent of all MLB games are decided by a single run, which might explain why most bettors stick to the moneyline.  Thus, explains why moneyline action is considerably higher than runline action for baseball.  In fact, most sports bettors who bet on baseball, usually place their bet on the moneyline.

The key when betting the runline, as it is with any form of sports betting, is identifying and capitalizing on value.

Baseball is the preferred sport among professional bettors because there is more value to be found than in the other sports.

When betting the favorite, the runline certainly looks appealing as you will, in most cases, go from laying money to getting money.  This is by the way, my favorite bet.  Especially, if there is at least a 3 game series.  Even if 30 percent of all games are decided by one-run, odds are that, should your team win, it will win by more than one run and cover the bet.
