2007 AFC Betting Tips

By: Richard Bleuze

This article will give NFL bettors some added insight into the happenings of what I feel are the 4 top  teams in the AFC for 2007.

The fact that the AFC championship will likely be won by one of these top four picks should not deter bettors in the least as six of the top seven teams ATS records in the league were held by AFC teams.

Let’s take a look at what should be the top teams in the conference in 2007 - 2008.

The New England Patriots are the early favorite at +110 and rightfully so – even if the Colts are coming off their first Super Bowl victory for that city.

Not only did the Patriots post a stellar straight up (SU) record of 12-4 last season, but New England was also good to bettors’ pockets as they went a very solid 10-6 ATS last season, the second-best mark in the league after the Titan and Jets who were both 11-5.

The San Diego Chargers, at +350, may be the No. 2 seed in the AFC in the eyes of bookmakers,  the Chargers may be hard-pressed to win the AFC because of losing both coordinators and venerable head coach Marty Schottenheimer.

The Chargers, 14-2 last season, ranked eighth in the league last year in ATS stats, going 9-7, but again, will be hard-pressed to duplicate their success of a year ago, particularly since they hired a man that is far more suited to an offensive coordinator’s position than a head coach’s job in Norv Turner.

To put it mildly, the Chargers’ front office actually helped this team take a big step backwards. The franchise has more than enough talent to reach the postseason despite Turner’s shortcomings. Bettors may want to note that the Chargers posted the fourth-best O/U record in the league last season, going 10-6.

No matter how many people count out the Indianapolis Colts, the fact of the matter is that they will once again have a legitimate shot at winning this conference title in 2008.  Ironically, Indianapolis is not one of the teams bettors should look to lay a bunch of money on in 2007 season.

Indianapolis Colts went a mediocre 8-8 ATS last season and 8-8 on the O/U. If you’re looking for a team that will yield high dividends without a high output, steer clear of the Colts at +450 to win the conference.

Finally, NFL bettors should look long and hard at is the Baltimore Ravens, who are +1200 to win the conference.

The fact is that the Ravens possess a defense that will keep them in every game – and should win some straight out.

The Ravens were a spectacular 10-6 ATS last season, tied for second in the league, but just 6-9-1 against the O/U. If you’re looking for a team that will cover the spread more often than not, the Ravens are a prime pick. At +1200, the Ravens are undoubtedly one of the best bets to win the Super Bowl.

As a side note, keep an eye out for the quickly improving New York Jets and Tennessee Titans in 2007.  Although, I don't believe they'll make it to the Super Bowl, NFL bettors should do well by placing bets on those teams.
