How To Bet on NBA Basketball

The basics to betting on NBA basketball are not that difficult to learn and understand.  The general rule is that there are three main types of NBA basketball betting.  They are:  NBA spread betting, NBA money line betting, and Over Under NBA betting.  In addition, some sports books also allow you to be able to make prop bets for the NBA as well.  The article below will briefly explain how each type of NBA basketball betting types work.

NBA Spread Betting

Betting the spread is the most common type of bet placed on NBA basketball. NBA spread betting is similiar to NFL spread betting for those of you that bet on the NFL.  When betting against or on the spread on NBA basketball you will be choosing a team.  As a rule, the oddsmakers will set a number that the favored NBA basketball team is favored by.  Thus, in order for you to win the  bet, the favored team must win by more than the amount of points they are favored by.  If not, then the underdog is the point spread winner.  Thus, in order for a bet on the underdog to win, the underdog can lose by fewer points than they are underdogs by or win the game straight up.  In NBA basketball, NBA spread betting pays out close to the same on each side.

NBA Money Line Betting

Money Line betting on NBA basketball is easy to understand.  Money Line is  the term used when you are betting on a team to win the game.  This type of bet usually pays out more than spread betting  for underdogs.  However, if you bet on the favorite NBA basketball team, then the favorite only needs to win the game and it does not matter by how much they win by.

Over Under NBA Betting

In addition to the above, you can also bet the over under in NBA basketball.  This type of bet involves betting on the total amount of points scored by both teams combined.  In Over Under, the oddsmakers will set a game total and bettors will be able to place a bet on the total numbers of points scored by both teams going over or under that set number.  For example the number for an NBA game may be set at 207.5, and bettors will have to chose whether the two teams will combine for more or fewer points than 207.5 throughout the game.  TIP:  as a rule, if the total is above 205, I suggest that you bet the under in the NBA basketball game.  As a rule, if the game total were to land right on the total number set by the oddsmaker of that sports book, then the bets on the over under for that game would be pushed.  In other words, your bet would be refunded.

Prop Betting for the NBA
