I am not going to be able to give you all of the tips and tricks available for placing a point spread bet on football, but I am going to try to give you some basic strategies so that you can improve your chances of winning when placing this type of bet on a game.

Here is a rundown of my basic point spread betting strategy.

Good Teams – Just because a team is doing good this season does not mean they are a good bet. A lot of the time, media will try to portray a particular team as good or bad. While this sounds helpful, it really is not when you are talking about betting on a game. This is where the point spread is really helpful as an equalizer. Most of the time popular teams will have a high point spread total – which can work against you when betting on them. On the other hand, less popular teams may cause “shading” of the line. It is important to evaluate each and every match up on its own and not use labels given to teams by the media and talking heads.

Key Numbers – When it comes to betting on NFL games, the key numbers are very important. The numbers 3, 7, 6, and 4 are important because they are the most common numbers for the margin of victory in NFL games. For example, if a team has a +3.5 point spread, it is better than them having a +3 because the three is one of the key numbers. This can determine the difference between winning and losing. For example, if your team won by a field goal, which is very common in the NFL, you would “win” the bet with a +3.5 and "push" with a +3. Scheduling – Another very important area to keep track of is scheduling of the games and what the teams have done recently. For example, a team that has gone up against a huge rival and won may not do quite as well in the very next game. On the other hand, other teams may have time to work on their problems and be able to beat a statistically better team if they are having an off week. Knowing not only which teams are playing the current week but also the teams that played in previous weeks against each other is important and can help your sports betting.

Point spread – When looking to place a bet, you want to make sure you go with the best possible point spread. This may seem like common sense – and it is – but too many people simply go with their favorite team or the winner as favored by the media like ESPN. When it comes to winning or losing over the long haul, the margin between the two is very, very small. This is why it is important to take advantage of every opportunity and advantage that comes your way. This can go a long way in making sure you are a winner at the end of the day. Sports betting comes with many ups and downs, but you always want to make sure that you are on top at the end of it all.
