Why Do Most Sports Gamblers Lose

It is widely known that the vast majority of sports gamblers are going to lose money.  It is said that about 90% of sports gamblers will lose money over the course of a year.  However, that does not stop most sports gamblers from wagering on sports.  When those sports gamblers eventually go broke and cannot wager any more, there is always somebody else waiting to take their place in line.

In my opinion, most sports gamblers lose because of poor money management.  There are far more sports gamblers who can pick winners than there are who can make money, and money management is the key.  Please read the article on money mangement.

Betting $20 on one game and $100 on another is a sure way to find yourself separated from your cash in the long run.  This is especially true if the sports gambler places 25% of their bankroll on one game!  A sports gambler may win a few games when betting more than they should, but eventually the loss, or losses, will come and the bettors ends up in trouble since they do not follow the rule of money management.

Another mistake often made is when the sports gambler doubles up after wins or losses.   This is a very common mistake many sports gamblers make, including those who have been betting for many years.

If you have ever read books on sports betting or articles on the internet, you will find that nearly everyone devotes to money management.  As I mentioned, a good place to start on money management is my article Money Management for Sports Bettors.

It is no secret that football and basketball are the two sports that receive the majority of the betting dollars, just as it is no secret that most long time sports gamblers will say those are probably the two toughest sports to show a long-term profit in.  However, baseball is a sport that many sports gamblers wager on during the summer.

In fact, the sport of choice for most professional gamblers is baseball, which happens to rank well below the top two sports above sports mentioned.  That is because baseball is a money maker for most sports gamblers.  In addition, hockey is another sport that many long time sports gamblers believe can give the sports gambler an advantage over the sports book.  However, hockey is bet less than even baseball!

Sports gamblers might not particularly like baseball or hockey.  However, they do love money!

Many sports gamblers know just enough to make them dangerous, as there is a great deal of difference between being knowledgeable in the NFL and being knowledgeable in NFL betting.  The NFL is, by the way the number one sport that is bet on by recreational bettors.

What many sports gamblers do not realize is that they are actually competing against other bettors who spend countless hours on handicapping, studying trends, injuries, and betting angles.  That is why those sports are not money makers for most sports gamblers!

If you do not have the time to study the games try to find somebody who does, whether it be on a posting forum, a reputable sports service, etc., but do not assume you know more than everyone else.  Especially, since you most likely do not!

There are a large number of sports gamblers who feel if a game is televised, it is their duty to have a wager on the contest.  Don't do it since you and thousands of other sports gamblers watch those televised game.  Always consider money management and if you watch a televised game, you will more liklely than not have seven or eight wagers on a single night, and even more on the weekend.

Generally speaking, the lines are the sharpest on televised games, as the oddsmakers and sports books realize that those games will be bet the heaviest.  However, if you  must wager on several televised game, those bets should be much smaller than your typical bets.

There is not any one key to becoming a winning sports gambler, but those who practice money management, put in some time, and practice discipline, are generally a step above the majority of bettors.
