Before The Flop - The First Betting Round While Playing Poker
By: Richard Bleuze
It is a notorious fact in online poker games that the first round of betting takes place before the first three community cards are dealt in the flop. This is known as "before the flop" or "pre-flop" betting. We can imagine now a poker game with imaginary poker players. In the pre-flop betting round (belonging to our imaginary game), the player in the third position has no more than three choices. Due to the fact a blind wager has already been made, the player can opt for any of the following actions:
1 Fold
2 Call
3 Raise
In case the player calls, he places $10 in the pot. If he raises, he places $20 in the pot. Afterwards, the betting continues clockwise around the table. Each player (in turn) will have the option to fold, call or raise. If, for instance, the third ore some other player has raised, the player who acts after that one who has raised, must now decides if he chooses to call $20 or raise to $30. It is necessary to be mentioned that there is a limit on the number of raises per round. It is also important to know that in some traditional, brick-and-mortar casinos, the limit is three raise while in others, it is four raises. If in our imaginary poker game, the third player raises to $20 for instance, everyone else (involved in this game) folds until the player at the button position, who calls this bet for $20. After the button player having called, the player in the small blind must decide if they are going to call for $15, or raise to $25. We should also mention that, in our game, the player in the small blind already has $5 in the pot, making the amount of his raise smaller. In case the player in the small blind position calls, the big blind is supposed to decide if he is going to call for $10 or raise another $10. If no one has raised, then the player in the big blind will have an opportunity to raise. This action is known as the option and it is available to the big blind as he has been forced to bet his original $10 without having the possibility to look at his cards. Once the pre-flop betting has been completed, the dealer will deal out three cards face-up. Generally, these "community" cards belong to everyone and the first three cards dealt are called the flop. It is commonly accepted that there is a difference between the first and second betting rounds (especially in Texas Hold’em Poker). As concerning the first round, the blinds are placed in the pot in order to give the players a good reason to play. If there were no blinds (in
Texas Hold`em, a player would have no good reason to enter a hand without the absolute best possible cards just because there would be nothing to win. As a matter of fact, the big blind would be risking their $10 bet to win nothing. However, once we reach the flop, there is already money in the pot and there will be no need for blinds anymore. More than that, the first player can choose to bet $10, or to check. Above all these, it is possible that all players still in the hand will check in the second round of betting. This means that pot does not increase on the flop. But if someone bets, players are supposed to decide what they are going to do: to call or rise (with the same 4-raise limit applying). Everyone would agree that pre-flop betting is based on the type of your cards. If you are playing cards that often turn into drawing hands (suited cards, connectors, and suited connectors) you want to see the flop as cheaply as it can be. The money you lose during your pre-flop, first betting round, is more substantial comparing to the money made up for by after the flop betting if you make your hand. In addition, the money you save by not raising (or sometimes by getting out entirely in case there are too many raises before you) is even more important. Before the flop strategy is as clear as crystal. Your main desire is to make people pay extra for your hands that can stand without improvement. This is about raising AA, KK, QQ, JJ pre flop, as well as raising Ace-Big pre-flop if you can get people out of the pot. A special situation is represented by AKs which can always be raised. In order to make things more explicit, your pre-flop hands that are likely to turn into draws (or immediate folds) on the flop are the ones you want to get in for as cheaply as possible. In case you succeed in getting in for $3 instead of $6, $9 or $12, that brings about more flops you can see, and therefore a much better opportunity for you to make your hand (which means at least flopping a four flush or open ended straight). You are supposed to resist the urge of raising the pot with suited connectors (with the exception of AKs). You must always raise with any pair over TT, except AA, that you should just call with before the flop sometimes and, afterwards, check-raise on the flop. AA and KK cope with a multiple way action pretty well, but, on the contrary, QQ and JJ do not. This is why you must be prepared to dump these hands if things get unfavorable on the flop. You might be tempted to wait around for another Q or J to fall. You are just drawing to a hand with 2 outs. It is recommended that you should not do that. However it might happen and when it does after you fold you will not be happy at all. But you can do something else instead, when you are playing in an online casino namely everytime an overcard to your pocket pair flops and there is action on the flop (and this action equals either more than two people calling or one/more raises), just dump the pocket pair. Afterwards, at the end of the hand, count the number of times you would have won vs. the number of times you have lost.
– How much the player can raise totally depends on whether the game is limit, pot-limit, or no-limit. In order to make things more explicit, we will simply assume our "imaginary" game in our "imaginary" sample hand is Limit Texas Hold’em poker, with $5 and $10 blinds, which means it is a "10-20 game".– by matching the size of the big blind
– In case the third player folds, he is out of the hand and he will be permitted to participate only at the next deal of the cards (and this time, because of the way the button moves around the board, he will be the big blind)
